Our History
Explore over a century of growth, leadership, and educational excellence. Since 1903, Rivonia Primary School has been a beacon of education in the heart of Sandton. Our story is one of rich tradition, nurturing a love of learning, and fostering well-rounded individuals prepared to impact the world positively.
Rivonia's proud beginning
The school’s history began on 10 November 1903, with the enrolment of the first pupil under a young English teacher. The school was initially known as the Rietfontein 15 Government Farm School, housed in a wood and iron building on a farm located about 200m north of the present-day Witkoppen Road, between the Klein Jukskei and the Zandspruit.
Relocation: A new foundation
Headmaster Mr William N Stopforth realised that the original location, set between two rivers, was constantly threatened by flooding from Highveld thunderstorms. With enthusiastic parental support, £25 (R50 at the time) was raised to purchase two acres of land slightly south of the original building, on the farm Edenberg, where the school stands today.
New identity: uniform, badge, and motto
Under the guidance of Mr Johan M Geertsema, the school uniform, the existing badge, and the school motto, Contentione Vince (Strive to Conquer), were introduced. At this time, Rivonia was an Afrikaans-medium school.
The start of the parallel medium
Due to significant transport problems, a contingent of English-speaking parents requested an English-medium and then Parallel-Medium School. This marked the start of Rivonia Parallel Medium School, which lasted over 15 years.
The Johan Geertsma School Hall
Mr Geertsema retired in 1972. The school hall was named the “Johan Geertsma School Hall” in his honour. A bronze bust of Johan, sculpted by ex-pupil Philip Minaar, stands in the foyer.
Infrastructure & innovation
During Mr Saks 21 years of professional leadership, the school underwent significant expansion: new classrooms were built; a media centre (the first of its kind at the time) was established; an office block was added; and the computer centre was built, furnished, and commissioned. Additionally, a tuckshop was built, tennis courts were erected, and a new swimming pool was constructed.

Principals Mr Sloane and Mr Irving
Mr Brian Sloane was principal until 1996. He was succeeded by Mr Tim Irving, who held the position from 1997 until 2001.
Mrs Carol Drysdale takes the helm
Mrs Carol Drysdale (formerly Miss Koegelenberg, fondly known as Miss K) took over as principal. She continues to maintain the leadership, passion for education, and discipline that define Rivonia Primary.
The Mandela Mural
The class of 2022 gifted the school a Mandela mural as a commemorative piece, signifying the end of the ‘messy’ COVID era.
